Every year we get the same question: "When exactly should I book to see the crossing?" For 2026, the early-season forecasts are in, and here's the honest picture - not the guaranteed one, because nobody can schedule a wildebeest.
The current 2026 forecast
Based on rainfall patterns and herd positioning so far this year, guides and ground operators across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem are pointing to:
- Late June-July: Herds begin arriving in the northern Serengeti; early, smaller crossings possible for travelers wanting to beat the crowds.
- August: The single most reliable month for crossing frequency - some days see multiple crossings. This is also the busiest month, so camps near the river sell out 10-12+ months ahead.
- August 10 - September 20 (approximate window): The period most forecasters are circling as peak crossing activity for 2026.
- September-October: Slightly calmer, still dramatic, noticeably easier availability and fewer vehicles at the riverbank.
What actually decides the timing
Rainfall, not a calendar. If the long rains (April-May) run heavy, grass stays green longer in the south and the herds move north later. A dry year pushes everything earlier. Our recommendation
If seeing an actual river crossing is non-negotiable for you, budget at least 3-4 full days in the northern Serengeti / Kogatende area, not just one. If you'd rather see the migration in a quieter, less-scripted phase, the calving season in Ndutu (December-March) delivers the same predator drama with a fraction of the vehicle traffic.
Whichever window you choose, book the camps near the river now - by the time August arrives, the good ones are gone.
