Climbing Kilimanjaro is the single biggest upsell to any Tanzania safari - and the route you choose shapes the entire experience.
Marangu Route (6 Days)
Known as the "Coca-Cola Route" for its hut-based accommodation (no tents) and gentler reputation. It's the only route with sleeping huts along the way, making it the most comfortable option logistically. The trade-off: the same ascent and descent path means less scenic variety, and the compressed acclimatization schedule gives it a lower summit success rate than longer routes.
Machame Route (7 Days)
The most popular route on the mountain, nicknamed the "Whiskey Route." Tent-based camping, more dramatic scenery, and an extra acclimatization day compared to Marangu - which meaningfully improves summit success rates. Steeper and more physically demanding, but most climbers rate it as the best balance of challenge and reward.
Lemosho Route (8 Days)
The longest and most scenic of the three, approaching from the west before joining the summit push. The extra day gives your body the most time to acclimatize, generally translating into the highest summit success rate of the three. It's also the quietest route for the first few days, with fewer other climbers on the trail.
Which one should you pick?
If comfort and budget matter most: Marangu. If you want the best-known experience with strong success odds: Machame. If summiting matters more than anything else and you have the extra day and budget: Lemosho.
Every route includes park fees, camping/hut fees, rescue fees, a professional mountain guide, porters, and cook - but none include international flights, visa, or tips. Pair any climb with a few days of safari before or after; most climbers say the wildlife is the perfect reward for tired legs.
